SESSION TYPES
THREE TYPES OF SESSIONS
Our full sessions have always been 30 minutes and include several sets. We have our signature shots as well, where we sneak the little chicks onto your child’s head or allow older kids to cuddle, kiss, and love the bunnies. The full experience allows us ample time to get over anxious jitters. Your child will have lots to individual time to actually play with the animals. It also guarantees that we will have loads of smiles (and even a ride on our awesome toy tractor!). This year, we will be also offering sessions in the Fall! For the entire experience packages start at $250.
Our photo op session will return for kids who want a quick visit for just a few signature shots. Many families have been coming to our studio for chicks and bunny sessions year after year. Or maybe they have older children who just want a quick cuddle. For each session, we will take a close up set of images on the color background of your choice. We will be sure to capture the ‘chick on the head’ and if age appropriate the ‘chicks to cheeks’ pose. Then we move to one (1) set of your choosing. You will fill out a form in advance of your session that allows you to make your set selection. Please note, the photo op is not recommended for children under 4 years. For the photo op experience, packages start at $100.
NEW! This year, we will be offering outdoor sessions in Central Park with the baby chicks. These 20 minute modified mini sessions will still include our signature shots, fun props, and now (hopefully) a bit of greenery and flowers.

WHERE DO THE CHICKS GO WHEN THEY ARE DONE TAKING PICTURES?
They grow up to be happy egg-laying backyard chickens of course!
Big Apple Portraits is a family run business, and over the last 10 years that means we have become backyard chicken farmers. Kim, Big Apple Portraits owner, grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania where her mother still lives. When we began taking pictures of little baby chicks, her mother began building a coop on 3 acres of her backyard. It has become a chicken playland with a heated coop, running track, and stream water fed pond. In summer, the chickens are let out every day to roam up through the trees and eat lots of bugs in the ground.
The family chicken fun now also includes the little kids trying to hatch chicks to differing levels of success. Jake, Kim’s nephew is a master hatcher while Kim and her kids fail year after year. Read more about Kim’s farming skills here. Since we need a new set of chicks every week during our sessions, we often source our chicks from Tractor Supply or commercial hatcheries. And all these chicks mean that Kim’s mom now has over 80 chickens.
Unlike many studios, we do not send our chickens to a random farm. Our chickens are not processed after leaving us, but become part of our family. After about 18 weeks they begin laying eggs and we sell their eggs on the porch using the honor system. Imagine that in NYC – just take some eggs out of the cooler and leave your cash.
Our ladies (the way we refer to the chickens) are very well cared for and also enjoy the company of the rabbits who have their own little spot near the coop.
